About us
The Chowk Story
The idea for Chowk was born from a simple vision: to transform traditional Indian craftsmanship into a deep artisanal expression.
Our journey began with an inspiration close to our hearts – Lucknow, a city brimming with history, architectural grandeur, and a vibrant cultural tapestry. The majestic monuments, graceful arches, bustling markets, and the very spirit of its surroundings came together in the name "Chowk" – a word that evokes the heart of a community, a meeting place of ideas and artistry.

Empowering the community, one thread at a time
At its core, Chowk is a celebration of collaboration. We believe in working hand-in-hand with incredible talent across India. We partner directly with weavers to source and make the finest fabrics, ensuring fair pay practices. These textiles then become the canvas for our unique interpretation of Chikankari.

A kaleidoscope of artistry and tradition
Chowk as brand delves into rich techniques, re-imagines them and creates pieces that resonate with a modern aesthetic.
Women, for generations, predominantly in and around Lucknow, have practiced this craft, passing down techniques and traditions from mother to daughter. Their nimble fingers bring to life the delicate patterns that define this timeless embroidery.

Narrating stories of ethical creation
Chowk is where the intricate beauty of hand-embroidery is celebrated and given a new life. Our brand is a hub where Indian craftsmanship, particularly from Lucknow, comes to life and connects with you.
We make each piece with great attention and heart. With Chowk, you'll find thoughtfully made textiles designed to add beauty and art to your everyday.

Founder's Note:
Hello,
I'm Shefali, the founder of Chowk and I'd like to start by saying that my connection to textiles isn't just professional; it's a part of my earliest memories. It began young accompanying my mom to fairs where I first learnt to appreciate the beauty of handmade.
That foundational understanding blossomed through my school years and I was always the one eagerly getting my hands dirty in everything art, craft (and even S.U.P.W-so not cool), driven by an inherent curiosity. This early, tactile immersion naturally paved my way to NIFT, Bangalore, where I pursued my formal education in textiles.
My initial chapters saw me sharpening my expertise, consulting for leading names and absorbing a wealth of industry wisdom. But as I gained insight, an undeniable urge began to blossom within me; I found myself craving more than just conversations about better and thoughtful ways of making.
I'd grown weary of discussions that felt like echoes rather than real shifts. So in 2023, when I started planning Chowk, I decided to design a brand where ethical practice would be the very blueprint, an undeniable foundation and not an afterthought.
My vision was to build a community that champions true impact, moving beyond mere talk to actively bring kindness into everything we do. We at Chowk, nurture collaborations, where mutual respect and growth flow freely, allowing integrity to be the unseen bond that connects every element of our work.
